The more marginalization someone experiences, the more suspect and even criminalized their pursuit of pleasure may be. This is exemplified in the cannabis industry by the number of Black people who are behind bars for distribution and possession, while the newly legal and recreational cannabis industry is led by White folks who profit freely. Joy and pleasure are necessary to humanity—essential to life—thus they are political. They should not be regulated by power, especially power that will not speak about or name itself as such. Getting curious about pleasure can mean reawakening—or discovering for the first time—the degrees of
sensation and emotional feeling that have been buried for a while. One of the side effects of awakening to sensation again is awakening to pleasure. This can be great news. This can also be confronting. Opening to and owning pleasure is part of the healing journey.
